BUIS 0900 – Computer Fundamentals (1)

Introduces basic computer literacy and skills to those who have only minimal knowledge and experience using computers.  Topics include the processing cycle, comparisons of operating systems and applications programs, identification and use of the various functions within the Windows desktop, and introduction to the Internet and Outlook.  Students are also provided the opportunity to develop or refine acceptable keyboarding skills.

BUIS 1010 – Computer Applications (3)

Introduces computer concepts within the framework of business applications. The emphasis is to build a solid foundation in the use of a word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, and database applications software.

BUIS 1300 –  Visual BASIC I (3) Preq. BUIS 1010; or permission

Introduction of computer programming concepts used in developing graphical user interfaces.  Pseudocode and algorithm development in problem solving are implemented.  This interactive course involves the student and the computer in the development of functional programs in the Visual BASIC language.

BUIS 1500 –  Client-side Web Publishing (3)

A study of the Internet; its technology, applications, and uses. The student will learn to create and maintain Web pages using Client-side programming languages and methods such as HTML, JavaScript, and Cascading Style Sheets.

BUIS 2000 –   Introduction to PC Hardware and Operating Systems (3)  

This course is intended to prepare the student to support personal computers and to study distributed computing. Classes will be divided into lecture, example, and lab time to work through common problems and issues with common PC computer hardware, and operating systems.

BUIS 2200 –  Business Computer Projects (3) Preq. Completion of required Business Information Courses; or permission  

Research projects are assigned on both individual and group basis.  Students learn to function in a group as they conduct research related to the assigned topics.  Theoretical systems are explored in the classroom.  A formal presentation is required.

BUIS 2300 –  COBOL (3) Preq. BUIS 1010; or permission

This programming course will have students code and execute error-free programs in the COBOL language.    Students will learn the proper methods of top-down design and structured COBOL programming.

BUIS 2350 –  C #  (3) Preq. BUIS 1010 ; or permission

C# is a modern object-oriented language that allows programmers to quickly build .NET components from high-level business objects to system-level applications.  These components can easily be converted to web services to be used over the Internet.

BUIS 2500 –  Web Software Tools (3) Preq. BUIS 1010  or Fine Arts comp class; or permission

Students learn how to create of a fully functional, interactive website using web application-development tools such as Dreamweaver and JavaScript.  Students will gain experience working with the software tools as well as gain knowledge of how to design and develop an effective website with static and dynamic characteristics.

Basic concepts of Business Communication to include network hardware, software, and technologies related to business needs.  A course designed to introduce students to computer networking terms and concepts.

BUIS 2999 – Special Topics in Business Information Systems (1-3) Requires  instructor  permission

Individual or group study, under the supervision of an instructor, of topics not otherwise available to students.

BUIS 3000 – Introduction to Business Computing Hardware and Software (3) Preq. BUIS 1010; or  permission

This course intended for non MIS majors to prepare the student to understand the types of Personal Computer and Server hardware and operating systems used today. Systems studied will include the AS400, Intel/Amd based PC, Apple PowerMac, and Sun Sparc. Common operating systems will be explored including the MS XP, MS Vista, Mac OSX, Linux, and Sun Solaris.  Classes will be divided into lecture, example, and lab time to work through common problems and issues with common computer hardware, and operating systems used in business today.  MIS concentration students are not eligible for credit.

BUIS 3050 –  Help Desk and IT Applications(1) Preq. BUIS 1010, BUIS 2000, BUIS 2700; or permission

The main purpose of this course is to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the help desk environment and the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to work in the IT industry. Students will learn problem-solving and communication skills that are very valuable when providing user support. Students gain practical experience providing assistance to users who are experiencing hardware or software problems working in Shawnee State University application and hardware labs. They will also learn how to work individually and in teams which will prepare them for a team-oriented work environment.

BUIS 3100 –  Database Management Systems (3) Preq. BUIS 1010; or permission

This course focuses on the use of Database Management Systems (DBMS) to solve a broad range of business problems.

BUIS 3200 –   Systems Analysis and Design (3) Preq. BUIS 1010; or permission

Course provides comprehensive exposure to major approaches in Systems Analysis and Design.  Requirements and design will be studied with traditional and object-oriented methods.

This course covers object oriented program development using Microsoft Visual Basic .Net and the Visual Studio .Net integrated development environment (IDE).  The course emphasizes developing business information systems for MIS students.

BUIS 3500 –   Server-side Web Publishing (3) Preq. BUIS 1300, 1500, 3100; or permission

Design and maintenance of interactive and dynamic Web applications within a server-based scripting environment.  Class includes a brief introduction to many of the commonly used scripting technologies with in-depth coverage of at least one.

BUIS 3700 –  Internet Network Management (3) Preq.  BUIS 2000, BUIS 2700; or permission

This course covers the fundamentals of Internet engineering using a combination of lecture and labs to provide the student with a thorough understanding of Internet protocols.  This course is a hands-on  lab oriented course where lectures prepare students for in-depth labs utilizing equipment used by an ISP.

BUIS 4200 –  Management and Deployment of Information Technology Projects (3) Preq. Completion of MIS Core and path requirements; or permission

Project management and deployment course with special emphasis on the control of Information Technology projects.  Students will gain familiarity with industry standard methods and technology for project management as they perform significant projects with minimal supervision.

BUIS 4300 –  Advanced Database (3) Preq. BUIS 3100, BUIS 3300; or permission

Language independent upper level course covering electronic commerce.  It will address the similarities and differences between E-Commerce and traditional business structures, explore some of the issues and concerns, and explore effective operation via lectures, discussions, and case studies.

BUIS 4550 – Cyber Ethics (3) Preq. Junior Standing or permission

Exploration of present and potential social, legal, and/or ethical issues relating to computers and the Internet.

BUIS 4700 –  Wireless Network Administration and Security (3) Preq. 3700 or  permission

Provides a hands-on experience to planning, designing, installing and configuring wireless LANs as well as both the theory and practice of network security, with the intention to get students involved in learning through in-class, group, and lab work.  The first half of the course will offer coverage of wireless networks while the second half provides a comprehensive overview of building and maintaining firewalls in a business environment.
