Knowledge of the fundamental computing process, components of the computing
system, and basic computer terminology.
Can demonstrate ability to use basic features of the operating system,
email, and the Internet. Minimum
keyboarding skills of 20 WPM with 3 or fewer errors on a three minute timed
writing.
Course Description:
Introduces computer
concepts within the framework of business applications. The emphasis is to
introduce the use of Windows, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access, and thus
building a solid foundation in the use of a word processing, spreadsheet,
presentation, and database applications software.
Course Outcomes:
Upon completion of this course, the student
must demonstrate that they can use an integrated business software package as a
tool in making business, accounting, financial, and statistical decisions. They can identify hardware and software
system requirements that match business needs and align with business strategy. They must demonstrate an understanding
of the basic components of a computer system, computer hardware, computer
software, computer applications, and computer issues.
The student:
Word:
1. can identify each of the features
in the tool and menu bars of
Microsoft Word 2003.
2. can create, save, open, edit,
spell-check, and grammar check a Word
document.
3. can apply formats such as: font
style, size, and color; change
margins, tabs, and
spacing; use indents, numbers, bullets, and borders.
4. can understand and use Word tables
for data and formatting.
5. can insert graphics into a
document, scale and position graphics on the
page.
6. can insert and delete page breaks
and footnotes into a document.
7. can create headers, footnotes and
endnotes using various styles of
numbering.
8. can apply the features of the page
setup and print menus.
Excel:
1. can create, save, open, and edit a
worksheet and embedded chart.
2. can use formulas/functions to
calculate sums, averages, percentages,
maximums, minimums,
absolute and relative cell addressing.
3. can format the worksheet.
4. can create pie, column, and line
charts from spreadsheet data.
5. can name ranges and worksheets.
6. can email with Excel.
7. can cut and copy adjacent and
nonadjacent cells.
8. can create series and use fill
handles to copy series.
9. can conduct "what if"
analysis including the "if" function, "goal
seek", and
"now" function.
10. can use print options for print to fit
and formulas version of a
worksheet.
Access:
1. can create and use relational and
non-relational databases that include
tables, queries, forms and reports.
2. can create, save, and run queries
and print the results including
simple, parameter,
update, delete, append, make-table, and cross tab
queries.
3. can find, filter, add, change, or
delete records (including duplicate
and unmatched).
4. can change the structure of a
database and the appearance of a
datasheet.

PowerPoint:

PowerPoint presentation using
templates and outline.

3. can edit, insert, rearrange, and
delete slides in a presentation.
4. can change design templates.
5. can select, move, copy, delete, and
size objects on a slide.
6. can add animation effects, insert,
size, and scale clip art images
in a presentation.
7. can add headers and footers to
slides and notes and handouts.

Class attendance:
The student is responsible for the activities of each class period. Assignments are due as stated on the
attached weekly schedule. Late
assignments will receive reduced credit.
Students missing
class because of legitimate reasons must consult with the instructor by
telephone or email concerning the absence.
Legitimate absences do not excuse the student from class
responsibilities. Examples of
reasons to be excused by the instructor are serious illness, death in the
family, or institutional activities.
Documentation for absences may be required.
Academic
Integrity:
You are required to do your own work on all tests and assignments. Any form of
cheating may result in a grade penalty or the student being withdrawn from the
course as well as dismissal from the University. See page 37 of the
Record Retention:
All student work submitted for a
grade will be retained for two weeks after the beginning of the next quarter;
after which point all paper work will be shredded and diskettes reformatted.
Course Credit by
Examination:
Students who have had prior computer training or who have considerable
experience working with computers have the opportunity to earn credit for this
course via a proficiency examination. The current fee for course credit by
examination is $105 (subject to change) and must be paid prior to the exam.
Students must achieve a score of 70% or higher to receive a passing grade. You
are not eligible to attempt a proficiency exam once you have been enrolled in
the course for 20 class days. The proficiency exam for this course may be taken
only once. Pages 38-39 of the 2003-05 catalog contain additional Information.
MOUS
Certification:
Students who have passed the Core level Microsoft User Specialist Exam for
Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint may receive credit for this
course by presenting the appropriate documentation to the Department of
Business Chairperson's Office. You must have passed the Word, Excel, Access,
and PowerPoint sections to receive course credit.
